You leave the carrier in the usual corner and fold a small blanket on the floor of it. The door stands open against the wall. By afternoon the cat is asleep in that cave. At dusk you lift the door and hear the latch. The cave empties.

An open carrier looks ready because the cat already chose it. That choice was for an open box. It does not automatically become a choice for a closed box. The first move fails when the last change is the latch.

A cave with the door off

An indoor cat uses a carrier as a cave when three things stay true at once. The opening faces a quiet part of the room. The box does not move. Nobody reaches through the door. A blanket can make the floor less hard. It cannot stand in for those three conditions.

The open door is part of the cave. It is how the cat checks the room and how the cat leaves. Take that door away and you have changed the spot, even if the plastic and the blanket are the same.

Naps that stay inside

The open carrier holds a nap when the box has sat in that corner for days, not minutes. The cat walks in without a hand behind it. The door stays off the opening the whole time the body is inside. You pass the corner without leaning down. The cat leaves and returns on its own clock.

On that afternoon the blanket did useful work. The cave was still a cave. You did not fail. The spot and the open door were the same object.

What the click changes

The same carrier empties when the click comes while the cat is still inside. The room view disappears. The exit disappears. The box, which had been furniture, becomes a container. A cat that chose a cave will leave a container if there is still a gap to leave through. If the latch is already home, the next meeting with that box is a different meeting.

It also empties when you close the door on an empty cave and then try to load. The cat watched the opening vanish. The corner is no longer the nap spot. It is the last place the door moved.

If the cat uses the carrier every quiet afternoon and refuses it the moment a bag appears beside it, the blanket is not the missing piece. The sequence is. The cave was safe until the cave started to look like a trip.

Hands at the opening

A hand at the door changes the cave even while the door is still open. You reach in to straighten the blanket. You reach in to nudge a hip. From inside the box that hand is a wall. The cat backs out and takes the chair. The carrier did not fail as a bed. The opening failed as an opening.

Sit to the side of the box, not in the doorway of it. If the cat returns once your hands are out of the frame, do not add a second blanket. Leave the door where it is and let the next entry belong to the cat.

One hour with the door still open

Do not latch the door today to test a theory. Leave the carrier where it already sits. Keep the door open. Do not put a bag next to it. Wait through one quiet hour and see whether the cat still enters.

If the cat only enters when the room is empty of bags and hands, treat the open box as a nap cave and nothing else that hour. If you need the cat inside later, close the door on an empty box the day before, then open it again and leave it, so the click is not the last sound the cat hears while lying on the blanket.

An always-open box can collect naps. A box that opens only when a trip is coming will not. The same plastic can do both jobs. It cannot do both in the same minute.

Keep the cave, change the last minute

An empty carrier after you shut the door is not proof that the cat rejected the blanket. It is proof that the cave and the container are not the same spot. The blanket can stay. The next change is smaller than a new bed: keep the door off while the cat is inside, keep hands out of the opening, and do not make the click the last thing that happens in a place the cat already trusted.

That is enough for one corner. The chair can keep the hour when the cave has become a box.
