A Mat Under the Desk Still Leaves Them on the Chair

You slide a mat under the desk and call the dark square a nest. The chair is empty. The cat jumps onto the seat, or sits on the crossbar, and leaves the mat untouched.

The mat looks like cover. It fails when the sit they want is the chair — height, a back, and a view of the room. Softness on the floor under the wood does not invent that seat.

The mat you slid under the desk

An indoor cat does not pick the space under a desk because a mat is there. The cat picks a stop that is high enough to see the room, or a bar they can perch on without lying flat. The floor cave is a hide. The chair is a watch. Dressing the floor answers the empty tile you see. It does not answer the seat they already use while you work.

If the first long sit after you place the mat is still on the chair, the mat is a rug in a hole, not a nest. Height with a back is the sit they came for. Softness under the wood is a different square.

When the cave under the desk holds

The cave holds when the chair is pulled out enough to leave a body-width gap, the mat does not slide when they turn, and your feet are not in that square. The cat can enter, turn, and leave. On that hour the seat can stay empty.

If your knees fill the cave all afternoon, the mat will stay neat. The hide only exists when the chair is not a wall of legs. The long sleep can stay on the seat. This cave only has to hold the hide.

When the chair still wins

The same mat fails when the chair is the sit and the floor is only shade. You dressed the shade. They keep the height. Extra layers under the desk do not move them.

It also fails when the chair is rolled in tight. There is no door into the cave. They take the seat because the seat still has a way off.

The bar under the seat

Some cats never take the seat. They sit on the crossbar under it. That bar is a thin high line with a drop on both sides. A mat on the floor cannot copy that edge. Leave the bar clear if they use it. Do not hang bags from it. A bag on the bar turns a perch into a hook.

A bar they already finish on is a perch. Treat it as one. Do not call an empty mat a failure of the chair.

Watch one sit before you add a second mat

Leave the mat where it is for the next work hour. Do not add a bed. See which square held the body.

If the sit is on the chair, keep the seat and stop dressing the floor. If the sit is on the bar, leave that bar clear. If the sit is on the mat, pull the chair out the same way each time so the door stays open. Change only the square that held the body. Do not add a second mat to answer a seat.

Keep the chair, or keep the cave

A cat on the chair after you dressed the floor means the seat was the nest and the mat was only shade. Keep the chair if they use it. Pull it out when you leave if you still want the cave. Do not put a second cushion under the same desk. Extra cloth in a closed cave stays neat.

One seat they already finish on is enough. The mat can stay for the hours your legs are gone. It does not have to win the day. One open cave or one clear seat is the whole station. Do not dress both on the same morning and expect both to fill.
