A Cushion on the Seat Still Leaves Them on the Back

You drop a cushion on the chair seat and call it a nest. The back rail stays bare. The cat walks the rim of the pad, climbs to the top of the back, and sits there looking at the room.

The seat cushion looks like the whole chair. It fails when the sit they want is the thin high rail, not the wide seat. Softness on the seat does not invent that edge.

The cushion you put on the seat

An indoor cat does not pick a chair because a pad is there. The cat picks a line that is high, narrow, and still shows the room. The seat is a floor with legs. The back rail is a watch. Dressing the seat answers the empty wood you see. It does not answer the rail they already treat as a perch.

If the first long sit after you place the cushion is still on the back, the pad is a lid on a lower square, not a nest. Height with a drop behind it is the sit they came for. Softness on the seat is a different square.

When the back rail holds

The rail holds when it is wide enough for both hips, does not rock when they settle, and leaves a way down to the seat or the floor. From that sit they can see the doorway. The cushion can stay unused.

On that hour you did not fail at offering a seat. The rail already was the perch. A thicker pad will not move them off it. The long sleep can stay on a bed. This rail only has to hold the watch.

When the seat stays empty

The same cushion fails when it is so fat that it covers the first step they used to reach the rail. They skip the chair. Extra height on the seat does not invent a sit on the back.

It also fails when you keep sitting in the chair. The rail is then above your shoulders. They will not share that line. Leave the chair empty for the hour you want them on it.

A pad that steals the rail

A cushion that slumps over the back turns the rail into a lump. They lose the thin edge. If they stop using the chair after you add the pad, take the pad off and see whether the rail comes back.

Do not wrap the whole back in a throw to “make” a nest. A wrapped rail is a different object. The sit was the hard line. Cloth on that line hides the perch they came for.

Watch one sit before you add a second pad

Leave the cushion where it is for the next quiet hour. Do not add a second chair. See which square held the body.

If the sit is on the rail, take the pad off the seat or leave the rail clear. If the sit is on the cushion, stop wrapping the back. If they never take this chair, the chair is not the spot. Change only the square that held the body. Do not add a second pad to answer a rail.

Leave the rail, or keep the seat

A cat on the back after you dressed the seat means the rail was the nest and the pad was only a lid. Keep the rail if they use it. Put the cushion on a chair they already sit in, not on the one they use as a watch. Those two chairs are not the same object.

One bare rail they already finish on is enough. The cushion can stay on a different seat. It does not have to win this chair. One bare rail is the whole station. Do not dress the seat and the rail on the same morning and expect both to fill.
