You set a cat bed next to the tote on the floor. The bed looks like the real nest. The cat walks past it, drops into the open bag, and stays there.

The bed looks right because it was made to be slept in. It fails when the sit they want is a soft crater with high cloth walls. A flat bed next to the bag is a lid. The bag is a cave.

The bed you set beside the bag

An indoor cat does not pick a tote because it is luggage. The cat picks a hollow that holds a turn, hides the spine, and still lets one ear own the room. A dedicated bed can do that work. It only does that work if those three things are true of the square you picked. Placing the bed beside the bag answers the empty floor. It does not answer a cave that already has walls.

If the first long sit after you place the bed is still in the bag, the bed is a neighbor, not a nest. Walls and a dip are the sit they came for. A flat pad beside the bag is a different square.

When the open bag holds

The bag holds when the mouth stays open, the cloth is slouched into a dip, and nobody zips it for a trip. The body can drop, turn, and leave. On that hour the bed can stay unused.

A stiff new tote that stands like a bucket will not hold. They want the slump. Worn cloth holds a shape. A board-stiff bag does not. Softness has to slump. It cannot stand at attention and still be a cave.

When the bed stays empty

The same bed fails when it is flat and the bag still has walls. You offered a pad. They kept the crater. Extra softness on the bed does not invent a rim.

It also fails when the bed sits in a walk and the bag sits in a corner. They take the quiet hollow. Move the bed to the corner before you blame the cover.

A bag that cannot be entered

A zipped bag is not a cave. It is a brick. If they only use it when the mouth is open, leave that mouth open on a bag they are allowed to wreck. Do not open it only when you need the bed to look unused.

Do not stack two totes to “make” a better nest. One slouched bag they already enter is enough.

Watch one sit before you move the bag

Leave the bed and the bag where they are for the next quiet hour. Do not buy another cover. See which square held the body.

If the sit is in the bag, keep that bag and fold the bed away. If the sit is on the bed, zip the tote and put it up. If they take neither, the corner was the point and both objects were only padding. Change only the square that held the body. Do not add a second bed to answer a bag.

Keep the bag, or keep the bed

A cat in the tote after you placed a bed means the cave was the bag and the bed was only a pad beside it. Keep one open bag they are allowed to use. Put the real laundry tote in another room so the nest and the errand are not the same object. The bag they sleep in should not leave the house.

One slouched mouth on the floor they already finish in is enough. The bed can stay for night. It does not have to beat the bag in the afternoon. One open mouth is the whole station. Do not dress the bed and zip the bag on the same morning and expect the bed to fill.
